Upwards of 20% of the 2.7 million Iraq and Afghanistan veterans will experience post-traumatic stress or depression, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Those who manage to receive treatment are forced to cope with inadequate treatment options, often placated with “cocktails” of prescription drugs, including powerful and addictive opiates. These veterans have served their country, but now their quality of life suffers. The VA estimated that as many as 20 American veterans commit suicide every single day.
